You don't need a backbone.
curiosity is what keeps us going.

being able to attach ourselves emotionally to another creature.
One of our own species is most satisfying, but not eternal.
no need for it to be mutual, either, but it's enhanced if it is
at this age, 62, I've been there, done that, and feel more alone than ever.
Just waiting- I don't even know for what.
